چکیده

An intensive survey was undertaken and reported the existence of an invasive armoured sailfin catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis from Bharathapuzha River, Palakkad, Kerala, India, its invasion as one foremost threats to endemic aquatic biodiversity Kerala. It belongs Genus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) which is known popular aquarium fish that constitutes most successful freshwaters taxa, having achieved global distribution. The occurred through culture trading intensified by distribution rainstorm flooding irrigation canal. were identified based on morphological tests, fishes ranged in length (9.50-31.75cm) weight (8.16-129.80 g). Distribution leads understanding changes disturbances species composition negative impact riverine ecosystem.

Icthyofaunal Diversity of Bharathapuzha River at Palakkad District, Kerala

Aquatic populations interact with the physico-chemical and biological factors in their habitat. Any change in the habitat can induce stress on the life forms. The major water bodies and rivers in Kerala are not free from the pollution stress of varying degrees due to the influx of effluents from nearby factories, pesticides and fertilizers from cultivating areas, besides urban and rural sewages...

Limited extracellular but complete intracellular acid-base regulation during short-term environmental hypercapnia in the armoured catfish, Liposarcus pardalis.

Environmental hypercapnia induces a respiratory acidosis that is usually compensated within 24-96 h in freshwater fish. Water ionic composition has a large influence on both the rate and degree of pH recovery during hypercapnia. Waters of the Amazon are characteristically dilute in ions, which may have consequences for acid-base regulation during environmental hypercapnia in endemic fishes. The...

The eyes of suckermouth armoured catfish (Loricariidae, subfamily Hypostomus): pupil response, lenticular longitudinal spherical aberration and retinal topography.

The dilated, round pupils of a species of suckermouth armoured catfish (Liposarcus pardalis) constrict slowly on illumination (over 35-40 min) to form crescent-shaped apertures. Ray tracing of He-Ne laser beams shows that the lenses of a related species (Pterygoplichthys etentaculus), which also has a crescent-shaped pupil, are well corrected for longitudinal spherical aberration, suggesting th...
